Minimally Invasive Gynecology Surgery: Recovery Planning

Minimally invasive gynecology surgery planning

Minimally invasive gynecology surgery often means smaller incisions, less disruption, and a faster return to normal routines than traditional open surgery. Still, recovery is not automatic. Good preparation can reduce stress and help you follow your surgeon's instructions.

Before surgery

Ask your care team what procedure is planned, why it is recommended, what alternatives exist, and what recovery usually looks like. Confirm medication instructions, fasting instructions, transportation, time off work, childcare, and whether you need help at home.

Prepare easy meals, loose clothing, pads if bleeding is expected, and a comfortable resting space. If stairs, lifting, or commuting are part of your daily routine, ask when those activities are safe to resume.

After surgery

Follow instructions for pain control, incision care, showering, activity, and follow-up visits. Light walking is often encouraged, but heavy lifting, sex, baths, and vigorous exercise may be restricted for a period of time depending on the procedure.

Call your provider for fever, worsening pain, heavy bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, chest pain, shortness of breath, leg swelling, or incision redness that spreads.

Set expectations early

Recovery varies by procedure and by patient. A hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, vNOTES procedure, ovarian cyst surgery, or fibroid procedure may each have a different timeline. The best plan is specific to your diagnosis, job, responsibilities, and health history.
